How to create the perfect outdoor dining tablescape

Published: 21/06/2024

Creating a beautiful and inviting outdoor dining tablescape can transform any gathering into a memorable event. Whether you're hosting a spring brunch, a summer barbecue or a cozy autumnal dinner, the right tablescape can set the tone and elevate the ambiance. Here’s how you can perfect your outdoor dining setup with the use of artificial garlands and floral arrangements, along with other elements.

1. Choose a theme

Before diving into the details, decide on a theme for your tablescape. This could be based on the season, a specific colour palette, or a particular event. Your theme will guide your choices for tableware, linens, and decorations.

2. Consider your base

Begin with a beautiful tablecloth or runner that complements your theme. For a natural look, cotton or jute works well. For something more elegant, consider a lace or linen option.

Add texture and layers with placemats or chargers. Woven placemats are great for a casual setting, while metallic chargers add a touch of sophistication.

3. Add some style with an artificial garland

Artificial garlands are a versatile and durable option for decorating your outdoor table and have the added bonus of being reusable for multiple events.

There are many styles available, each creating a different look so consider your theme before choosing.

For a natural, earthy feel, choose a greenery garland such as eucalyptus, ivy, or gypsophila. If you’d like to add a pop of colour then opt for garlands with artificial flowers like peonies, sunflowers or lavender.

Lay the garland along the centre of the table as a base for your centrepiece. You can also drape it over the edges of the table or intertwine with fairy lights for an enchanting ambience.

4. Add floral arrangements

Artificial floral arrangements can be just as stunning as real ones and can really add the wow factor to your table.  They also have the added benefits of lasting longer, are great for allergy sufferers and don’t attract the bees and bugs.

Use a mix of vases in different heights and styles to create visual interest. Jars, vintage pitchers, ceramic or glass vases all work well depending on the look you are trying to achieve.

Next, ensure you have balance in your blooms by mixing larger headed flowers with smaller filler flowers and greenery. For example, pair artificial roses, peonies or faux hydrangeas with baby's breath and eucalyptus.

Position your floral arrangements in the centre of the table or, if you’re using multiple, space them evenly along the length of the table. Ensure they are not so tall that they obstruct guests' views.

5. Set the table

Choose plates, bowls, and glassware that complement your theme. For a cohesive look, stick to a consistent colour palette.

Lay out your cutlery and for a touch of elegance, tie it with a ribbon or place it in a decorative napkin fold. You can even add in a pretty flower or foliage stem.

Cloth napkins add a sophisticated touch. Use napkin rings or fold them creatively to enhance the tablescape. YouTube has some great napkin folding tutorials.

6. Add finishing touches

Candles add warmth and ambiance. Place them in lanterns, candle holders, or even jam jars. For an evening event, string fairy lights above the table for a magical glow.

Add name place holders for a personal touch or small favours that guests can take home. These can be placed on or beside each plate.

Lastly, consider additional elements like decorative items or small seasonal pieces like pinecones or pumpkins, depending on your theme.

Creating the perfect outdoor dining tablescape is all about attention to detail and creativity. By incorporating artificial garlands and floral arrangements, you can craft a stunning and lasting centrepiece that sets the tone for your event. Remember to balance aesthetics with functionality to ensure your guests are comfortable and the table is both beautiful and practical. Happy entertaining!
